Kitakyushu City is located at the northernmost part of Fukuoka Prefecture with a diverse history and culture.Starting with Kokura, the city center that prospered as a castle town, Mojiko which prospered as an international trading port during the Meiji period and the area of Yahata, which had progressed alongside with the history of steelmaking in Japan.

And when the curtain of night falls, it shows a different expression.

There are eight "Japan Night-view Heritage" sites in the city, including the panoramic night view from Mt. Sarakura, which can be climbed by cable car and slope car, the dynamic night view of the Kanmon Strait from the Mojiko Retro Observation Deck, and the fantastic Kokura illuminations. In addition, you can enjoy a variety of night views, such as the factory night view that symbolizes the city of manufacturing.

March 2022. Kitakyushu City has been recognized as the best of Japan's New Three Most Spectacular Night Views for its wonderful night views. Kitakyushu City has been certified for the second time, since 2018.

* What is Japan's New Three Most Spectacular Night Views?
Aiming to revitalize night view tourism in Japan and overseas, the Yakei (Night View) Convention & Visitors Bureau conducted a vote by about 6,100 night view tourism specialists nationwide, and each night view spot that was voted for were categorized by city. The top three cities are certified as " Japan’s New Three Most Spectacular Night Views" from the results.

What is "Japan Night-view Heritage"?

Established in 2004, the Japan Night-view Heritage is the first ever night view certifiying brand in Japan by the Japan Night-view Heritage Secretariat based on votes and examinations by night view meisters nationwide once every year.

Kitakyushu has nine night views and events that have been designated as Japan Night-view Heritage.
In August of 2022 the Wakato Brigde was selected as the the 8th Japan Night-view Heritage site of the city.

One of the best night view spots in Japan. It takes about 10 minutes to reach the summit with an altitude of 622m using both cable cars and slope cars. The view from the observatory with a viewing angle of over 200 degrees is called the "10 Billion Dollar Night View."

From the observatory at an altitude of 124m, you can see the magnificent Wakato Bridge over the Dokai Bay and the factories of Yahata, Tobata and Kokura. The observatory has two floors, so you can enjoy the night view even during rainy weather.

Wakato Bridge

WAKATO BRIDGE

Connecting the Wakamatsu and Tobata wards, it is a 627 meter long suspension bridge featuring a bright crimson exterior. In 2018 lighting up the brigde at night began, creating an impressive view from the surrounding areas. In March 2022 the Wakato Brigde became designated as a national important cultural property.
