The 124-meter-elevation Takatoyama is reported to have had a mountain castle build upon it in the middle ages by Obaokinokami Kagetane.

Famous for hydrangeas,In June, it is held "Wakamatsu Hydrangea Festival", while in season the area bustles with visitors who have come to see them.

Also, the so-called Fire Festival held in July is magnificent.  A procession of around 2000 people carrying torches wind their way up the mountain, looking like a serpent clad in fire.

The nightscape visible from the observation deck on the summit has been nicknamed “The Kappa’s Hidden Jewel Case” and has been certified as “A Night View Inheritance of Japan” ®.  The Wakatoohashi (Wakato Bridge), Hibikinada (in the Kanmon Straits), and Sarakurayama (Mount Sarakura) are symbols of Kitakyushu and of course worth seeing, as is the multi-colored factory nightscape, as beautiful as star-studded sky.

There are many highlights worth noting, such as the Forest of Prefectural Trees, which includes trees from all the prefectures in Japan; the Manyoshu Botanical Gardens, which gathers together plants associated with Japan’s oldest existing collection of poetry; the Bussharito (Busshari Tower, or Tower of Buddha’s Ashes); the Kappa-Sealed Jizoson (Earth Treasury); and stone monuments to the literature of Wakamatsu novelist Hino Ashihei.
