On weekends and national holidays, Karato Sea Market holds “Ikiiki Bakangai,” an event with stalls lined up selling seafood.

During this bustling event, which also attracts visitors from overseas, you can order takeout of delicious sushi with fresh seafood topping, Shimonoseki’s famous fugu or deep fried seafood.

There is a lawn terrace on the roof, giving impressive views of the Kanmon Straits.

Also, neighboring Kanmon Warf is a seaside mall featuring a lineup of restaurants and souvenir stores where you can enjoy Kanmon’s famous seafood.

You can also marvel at beautiful scenery from the seaside boardwalks.

In addition, Shimonoseki has numerous historical sites from the Genpei War and end of the Edo period, making for an enjoyable stroll among historical surroundings. Highlights include Akama Jingu Shrine, where the Emperor Antoku is enshrined and who is said to have drowned in the Shimonoseki Straits during the Battle of Dan-no-ura; Mimosusogawa Park, which contains a replica of a Choshu battery from the Shimonoseki Campaign; and the Former British Consulate in Shimonoseki, an Important Cultural Property that was built in 1906.
